Tonight was the day of the term so to celebrate we had a small party for all the ESOL students at our community learning centre. We gave out certificates, people shared international food and we took some pictures… Thanks everyone for a great party and another great year of classes. See you all after the summer holidays, back ready to continue the studies from Wednesday 18th August onwards… Have a lovely summer.

Tonight is the last class of the term, and the year! So tonight we worked on finishing off the SQA assessments. We had some more listening to do so we completed that and followed it up with a discussion about moving to Scotland and the differences between living here and the countries the students lived in before. It was all very interesting as some students had similar experiences about some things and very different ones for others.
Thanks for all your hard work this year and see you all tomorrow for the end of term party!!

Tonight we followed on from last week by taking an example UK citizenship test online … you can try it here.
Unfortunately we all failed – so we must study more – but it was interest to see how complex the knowledge you need to have to pass the test. It was only our first attempt and we hadn’t prepared for the test though… Keep studying everyone!

The class had lots of questions tonight. First we looked at the differences between maybe / possibly / perhaps. Very useful words! Then we had a long discussion about citizenship and all the issues surrounding passports and the UK citizenship test. Very complicated issues so anyone interested in finding out more should look on the internet.

We continued our studies into modal verbs by looking at must and can’t be for deduction. He’s not in today. He must be on holiday / She said she was right. She can’t be wrong! etc. Some homework looked into this a bit more…

Well now the election has happened, we talked about the events of the last week. Was interesting to hear about how things work in other countries…

We continued our studies into modal verbs, and looked at some more examples: should, must, have to, can, can’t, ought to etc.
We looked at some examples where we might see and use such language.

We continued the subject of what we can do in our free time by looking at the example of Aberdeen.

We read all about what we can do in the city and the surrounding area in the north of Scotland. Maybe we should take a class trip up there sometime! The class then moved onto looking at some modal verbs – must and have to – and the differences between them. Homework was to write a similar profile of Edinburgh or a town they know well. Looking forward to hearing all about what people can do there!
